A Cambodian court sentenced opposition leader Sam Rainsy in absentia to two years in prison on Wednesday for having led villagers in uprooting border markers along the Cambodia-Vietnam border in October last year.
The Svay Rieng province court convicted villagers Meas Srey and Prum Chea to one year in prison and ordered them each to pay 5 million riel (US$1,200) in compensation to district authorities for moving the border posts. Rainsy was convicted in absentia to two years in prison, handed an 8 million riel fine and ordered to pay 5 million riels compensation to district authorities. All three must pay an additional 50 million riel in compensation for destroying the border posts, according to the ruling.
Cambodia’s parliament voted on Monday to remove the immunity of opposition leader Sam Rainsy. Lawmakers from the Sam Rainsy Party (SRP) boycotted the vote to lead a march of more than 300 people as the house paved the way for courts to impeach Rainsy over a controversial publicity stunt on the border with Vietnam on Oct. 25.
The leader of Cambodia’s main opposition party lost his legal immunity for the second time this year following a vote Monday in parliament that was boycotted by the opposition. Sam Rainsy stands accused of overseeing the removal of wooden posts that mark the border with Vietnam in Svay Rieng province in eastern Cambodia.
